The Frameless Concept
One of the secrets to Behlen’s successful expansion in the steel
building industry is our unique frameless concept.
First introduced in 1949, and subsequently modified and improved as part of
a continuous assessment, our frameless concept is still unique in the
The support strength of a Behlen steel panel can equal that of a steel
girder of the same length and weight.
The strength lies in our exclusive “compound” corrugation process which roll
forms sheet steel into 4 – ½” deep corrugations, with a series of smaller
corrugations. These small corrugations enhance the strength achieved with
Behlen uses the finest made galvanized steel in thickness of up to 13 gauge
for its wall panels. This is as much as five times the thickness often used
in frame buildings.
Joined together with sturdy 3/8” diameter bolts and polyethylene washers at
6” intervals, and sealed with top quality strip caulking, Behlen panels form
a completely weather-tight, load-bearing shell. Because of this, Behlen
panels can be insulated to produce R values leading to significant savings
in heating and cooling costs.
The lack of interior framing allows total use of the building interior.
Costs normally incurred working around framing are eliminated. All surfaces
are clear and clean for maximum aesthetic appeal and functionality.
The Behlen wall panels are strong enough to resist normal knocks and scrapes
that can damage conventional frame structures. If damage does occur,
replacement of individual damaged panels speeds repair and keeps costs to a

Designed to meet the demands of today’s needs, the Series 1 Convex Building
is engineered and manufactured to accommodate fast assembly with a
pre-engineered building system which allows for simple assembly.
Building designs which distribute the weight of the building throughout the
foundation as compared to the point load designs of the conventional rigid
frame buildings translates into savings in foundation costs. Combined with
a minimum requirement for site preparation and the elimination of the need
of heavy erection equipment, the savings are easily appreciated.
HIGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The corner stone to the Series 1 Convex system is the high energy efficiency
for heating and cooling during the changing seasons. The long term savings
for ever increasing energy costs will be quickly appreciated over the life
of the building.
Airtight seam lines and eave connections prevent the loss of heated/cooled
inside air providing you with comfortable working conditions year-round.
The Series 1 Convex offers economical insulation alternatives not available
in the standard rigid frame buildings, without expensive additions such as
standing seam roofs and wafer wall systems. Our ceiling cavity, allowing up
to R50 of loose fill insulation material and a wall liner package capable of
accommodating to R30 carton insulation, offers you the most energy efficient
building available in today’s market.
Behlen’s pre-engineered detailing and advanced manufactured techniques
ensure precision components. The Series 1 Convex is made to fit together
right, the first time!
Heavy gauge walls, ceiling and roof panels are fastened together with 3/8”
plated bolts to form a super strong and secure building. Sealer tape is
placed at all roof and ceiling seam lines and overlaps making the building
completely weather tight.
A strut system connects the roof and ceiling panels forming a structural
design, which is both strong, and eye appealing when completed. The end
wall panels have die-stampled louvers to allow free flow air movement
through the plenum area.
A choice of colours for wall panels and trims makes your Series 1 Convex a
structure to be proud of.

The exterior shell of a Behlen building provides an airtight, weather
tight seal against the elements. The interior remains dry and comfortable.
Likewise, Behlen design features allow for easy application of insulation to
meet or exceed recommended insulation values. The roof system, with
spacious attic area in the Convex provides a readily-accessible area into
which insulation can be blown.
In fact, the Behlen roof system is so easy to insulate and offers such a
substantial improvement in energy efficiency that many conventional
buildings install Behlen roofs, which can be purchased as separate units.
The frameless, galvanized steel walls also will accept a variety of
insulation techniques from spray-on to strapping and batts.
The high insular factors attainable with obstruction-free interiors mean
easy temperature maintenance and fast heating and cooling in Behlen
buildings. And that means lower energy costs.
Cases have been documented where energy consumption in Behlen buildings was
one-half to two-thirds less than in comparable conventional buildings.
Savings like that can go a long way toward quickly recovering the capital
costs of the building.
CLEAR SPAN ABILITY
The absence of interior posts,
beams, wall framing and exposed ceiling trusses allows total design
flexibility within a Behlen structure. All interior partitions are
free-standing and can be altered anytime without structural changes. The
unobstructed ceiling affords better air circulation, better lighting, a
pleasant appearance and an unencumbered view.
UNIFORM FOUNDATION LOADING
Because the supporting walls of a
Behlen building spread the design loads uniformly along the foundation, less
elaborate foundation systems are required than for frame buildings, which
concentrate significant loads of column locations.
And “less elaborate” translates “less expensive.” On average, a savings of
5% to 10% on the overall construction costs of the building is possible.
Depending on building size and soil conditions, one alternative that can be
considered is the inexpensive floating slab foundation.

easily with no heavy cranes and a minimum of site preparation and labour.
So you see significant savings on costs for equipment and construction.
And remember. Due to the high insulation values attainable with Behlen
buildings, lower-capacity heating and air conditioning equipment is

Maintenance costs for Behlen
buildings are minimal over a long life span. Corrosion-resistant,
galvanized, colour-coated panels stand up admirably to wear and aging. The
